Frequently Asked Questions

Are you accepting new patients?

We are accepting new patients at this time. Please call our office at (570) 424-1201 and our representative can schedule a new patient appointment for you.

What do you do on the first visit?

For your first visit (for adults), expect to stay about one hour. On this visit, we review your medical history, take all the necessary x-rays for diagnosis (or review transferred x-rays), perform an initial exam, and generate a treatment plan based on your needs. Photos of the inside of your mouth can be taken to show you what we see. A cleaning is generally not provided on this visit. We also have a comprehensive patient education system on monitors in every treatment room to aid in explaining complex treatments. For patients under 18 years old without complex issues, generally, we can perform the above as well as provide a cleaning in under one hour. Emergency appointments are also available for new patients with pain, swelling, or other significant concerns.

How often should I routinely see a dentist?

For children and adults, we recommend a routine consisting of a professional cleaning and a dental exam every six months. Those with complex issues such as periodontal disease or a high tendency to develop cavities should be seen more frequently to monitor and treat your condition.

When should my children first see a dentist?

For first time healthy patients, we recommend a child's first visit to the dentist at three to four years of age... unless decay, pain or other pathology is evident or uncertain. Other reasons for visiting the dentist sooner include excessive crowding of teeth (which may be extra teeth), excessive redness or bleeding, etc.

Why must an adult accompany a minor?

A minor receiving dental treatment must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must be on premise, not necessarily in the treatment room. This is necessary in case of a medical emergency or treatment changes for the minor.

Do you have any specialist on board?

Pocono Dental Associates has three general dentists. We do not have any specialists at our facility. However, should you require a specialist for your treatment, we can refer you to one of many specialists on our referral network. We work closely with our specialists to provide the treatment you need.

When may I need a specialist?

Specialists are highly trained individuals that perform one segment of dentistry (i.e. Periodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, etc.). In some cases, the training and experience of a specialist is needed to restore your dental condition. You may require one or multiple specialist depending on your dental needs.

What is an antibiotic premedication?

For patients with certain heart conditions or a prosthesis placed in the body (i.e. artificial hip, knees or heart valves), an antibiotic may be required before dental procedures. This antibiotic is used to protect the heart or prostheses from potential infections that can result from your dental procedure. If your physician states that you need an antibiotic before any surgeries or dental visits, please inform our office before your first visit.
